How to Choose the Right Website Designer for Your Business

Choosing a website designer can feel like a guessing game.

Everyone has a portfolio. Everyone says they build “custom websites.” And pricing is all over the place.

So how do you actually know who’s the right fit?

Start with this shift in mindset

You are not hiring someone to “build a website.”

You are hiring someone to help you:

  • attract the right people

  • guide them through a decision

  • turn them into leads

That’s a very different skill set than just design.

This is exactly how I structure all custom built websites, because your website is part of a larger growth system, not a standalone project.

Look at how they think, not just what they design

A portfolio shows you what something looks like.

It doesn’t always show you why it works.

The right designer should be able to explain:

  • Why the homepage is structured a certain way

  • Why content is placed where it is

  • How the site supports conversions

For example, when reviewing my projects page, you’ll notice each build is structured to guide someone, not just impress them with pretty graphics.

What this looks like behind the scenes

Here’s something most people don’t think to ask:

“What happens before design starts?”

Because that’s where the real value is.

A strong process should include:

  • understanding your audience

  • mapping out page flow

  • planning messaging before design

Common mistakes (that cost people later)

This is where a lot of businesses run into issues.

They choose based on:

  • the lowest price

  • the fastest timeline

  • or just liking the design style

And then later realize:

  • the site doesn’t generate leads

  • messaging feels off

  • they need to redo everything

It ends up costing more in the long run.

Let’s talk about price (because this matters)

If you’re seeing a wide range of pricing, it’s not random.

You’re comparing different levels of work:

  • Basic design

  • Template customization

  • Strategy driven, conversion focused builds

The investment reflects the depth of thinking behind it.

And if your goal is growth, not just a website, that difference matters.

The goal is confidence, not confusion

You should walk away from a conversation with a designer feeling:

  • clear on the process

  • confident in the direction

  • supported in the decision

Not overwhelmed. That's how you'll know when you chose the right website designer.
